  SFCP Overview

The Santa Fe Children’s Project works to create opportunities and enhance the quality of life for children and families in one of Santa Fe County’s most vulnerable neighborhoods by providing needed services and support.

Our initiative began in 2004 with Agua Fria Preschool, a private-public pre-kindergarten program that offers the high-quality early-childhood education shown to have a positive impact on low-income children and their families.
Investing in early childhood development and education results in better school performance, less criminal behavior, reduced dependence on welfare and higher-paying jobs as adults. At the same time, engaging a community around its children improves the chances of sustainable success.

We believe effective parents, engaged families, committed teachers and active neighbors stand behind students’ success. To create a safe, healthy learning environment in which Agua Fria’s children can thrive, SFCP aims to establish a comprehensive network of support services and programs to strengthen family and community ties.

To this end, we have engaged a community implementation and planning process and a committee of Agua Fria residents who advise the SFCP.

Healthy kids unlock a wide, wide world
Agua Fria Preschool, a full-day pre-kindergarten program with after-school care for all four-year-olds, also provides family support through home visitation.

Because a productive learning environment involves the whole community, upcoming programming includes:
» parenting and child-rearing classes and support
» a family support center
» elementary, secondary and continuing education opportunities
» neighborhood pride events
» recreational activities
» neighborhood heritage projects

Independent Evaluation Study finds that graduates of the Santa Fe Children’s Project Pre-K class improved much more than students from a demographically comparable Pre-K class
