A Message from Lucy Peterson, UWSFC Board Chair

Dear Friends,
In case you have not already heard about it, I am privileged to introduce you to The Santa Fe Children's Project. It is the comprehensive community development initiative of United Way of Santa Fe County. At its core is our pre-kindergarten program outlined in this newsletter. Kinder-garten readiness is a proven predictor of success in school and in life.

We can all be proud that our United Way has recently received a five year federal grant and additional funding from the NM Children, Youth and Families Dept. This further places us in a unique position to make a difference in the lives of kids and their families in Santa Fe. Through the various programs that comprise the Santa Fe Children's Project (SFCP) everyone who gives to United Way is helping to educate the workforce of the future.
The fall has traditionally been the time when many of us turn our attention to planning our philanthropic gifts. Please consider a donation to help the kids in Santa Fe prepare for the future, theirs and our community's. With the generous support of caring people like you, your United Way can continue the success story that is the Santa Fe Children's Project.

In these tough economic times our kids need us more than ever. Thank you in advance for putting United Way on your list for a gift this fall.

Sincerely,

Lucy Peterson
Board Chair

UWSFC Receives Project LAUNCH Grant

Through the New Mexico Department of Health, United Way of Santa Fe County's Santa Fe Children's Project (SFCP) has been awarded a five year $732,673 federal grant for the development of Project LAUNCHProject LAUNCH (Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children's Health) is a new federal grant program designed to promote the wellness of young children ages birth to 8 years of age by addressing the physical, emotional, social, and behavioral aspects of their development.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is funding $27.5 million in Project LAUNCH grants to state and tribal programs over the next five years.  New Mexico is one of only 6 states in the country to receive a Project LAUNCH grant.  These funds are to be used for the development of a demonstration project to promote the well being of young children.

UWSFC is gratified that the Santa Fe Children's Project has been chosen by the New Mexico Department of Health as the demonstration project for New Mexico. This grant allows us to greatly expand our already successful model of Early Childhood Education and Care (ages 0-8).

Leveraged with our new funding from CYFD, the Project LAUNCH grant moves the Santa Fe Children's Project closer to its steadfast goal of lasting sustainable change.

SFCP - A Highway to Success ...

UW Girl performing

The long-term goal of United Way of Santa Fe County and our Santa Fe Children's Project (SFCP) is to provide all families in Santa Fe County with support systems, programs, and opportunities that strengthen them and especially, their children, to succeed.

The UWSFC strategy for county-wide implementation of the SFCP is:
  1. Early Intervention - Baby University: A home visitation curriculum, that serves families with children pre-natal to three years old. In the coming months, we will expand our capabilities through First Born®.
  2. Early Education - Pre-k classes for 4-year-olds that include parenting support.
  3. Economic Development -  Family savings and financial literacy programs.
  4. Out-of-School Time Program - Collaborative planning for enriching activities for kids and parents that enhance academic performance.  Serves 5-12 year olds and their families.
  5. Early Childhood Policy and Advocacy - Statewide business community advocacy. UWSFC President and CEO, Katherine Freeman, is currently Chair of the Early Childhood Investment Committee.

Pre-K Program Expands to
Kaune Elementary

UWSFC is proud to announce the expansion of its Pre-k program to Kaune Elementary.  A cornerstone of the SFCP, the Pre-k program, which was initially implemented and tested in the community of Agua Fria, is now in its fourth year of operation. The success of the Agua Fria program prompted the Santa Fe Public School District to request that UWSFC apply for additional funding to expand the Pre-k program to other schools. It has taken us two years to overcome the logistical and legal obstacles for expansion, but we have now succeeded at Kaune Elementary. Now, at age four, children in the Agua Fria AND Kaune elementary school districts can be enrolled in our high-quality licensed Pre-k program. We now serve 80 children and their families in the two programs and have established a successful template for seamlessly expanding the Pre-k program to additional sites in the future.
Baby University Joins Forces
with First Born® Program

The SFCP Baby University serves families and their children pre-natal to three years old, through a home visitation initiative that includes:
  • medical screening
  • child development
  • a parenting curriculum
  • parent-child book clubs
  • parent support groups

While searching for ways to standardize, replicate and expand this successful program, we discovered the First Born® Program (FBP), created by Vicki Johnson in Silver City, NM.

FBP augments the SFCP Baby University curriculum with:
  • proven training procedures
  • standardized materials
  • evaluation and record keeping protocols

Not only has the FBP earned the endorsement of the NM Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD), CYFD will fund the program for the next four years with the ability to increase the budget each year based on success factors.  This year's CYFD grant is an amount up to $74,065. These funds will be used to to hire, train and manage five home visitors who will be serving ninety families within the first year. There are approximately 1600 births each year in Santa Fe County; 640 are first born children.

By joining forces with First Born® , the SFCP is poised for enormous growth and a new capacity for early positive intervention.
