Alexis de Tocqueville Society

Alexis Charles-Heri Clerel de Tocqueville was only 26 years old when he traveled all over the United States in 1831.

His observations, readings, and discussions were that Americans hold in common a unique willingness to work for the public welfare-- a tendency to lend faithful support to neighbors and countrymen, especially in times of need.

It is in this spirit that United Way of America created the United Way Tocqueville Society in 1984.  Today, the Society is one of the world's most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about improving peoples' lives and strengthening communities.

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society honors individuals who generously give $10,000 or more annually and exemplify the spirit of philanthropy astutely noted by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America.

“When an American asks for the cooperation of their fellow citizens, it is seldom
refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously, and with great will.”

The Society was initiated by the United Way of America to more deeply involve influential leadership, encourage major gifts and develop new resources. If they so choose, members of the local chapter in Santa Fe County are recognized in the annual national roster of Tocqueville Society members published by United Way of America. Members will be recognized locally in special listings of the Summit Club.

The Fleur-de-Lis Awards for Excellence are presented to communities with Tocqueville Societies that showed outstanding results over the previous year's results.  United Way of Santa Fe County is proud to be a 2007-2008 Fleur-de-Lis Award for Excellence recipent.

The Santa Fe Summit Club
(formerly the Innovators Circle)

The Santa Fe Summit Club is a group of philanthropists and influencers in Santa Fe who are interested in creating lasting change in our community.  The Santa Fe Summit Club includes people who support United Way of Santa Fe County’s mission with an annual gift of $1,000 or more.  We also highly encourage people who have the capacity to give at the Alexis de Tocqueville level of $10,000.

Members would have the opportunity to participate in:
•    Small group tours of the Santa Fe Children’s Project – observing students, staff and volunteers in action
•    Planned social gatherings for Summit Club Members
•    Round Table Conversations with the CEO

Unless they request anonymity, all donors are recognized on the website of United Way of Santa Fe County at www.uwsfc.org
