UNITED WAY OF SANTA FE COUNTY HONORS FIVE GREAT TEACHERS IN THE SANTA FE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Teachers Nominated by Audience Members at Waiting for “SUPERMAN” Premiere

United Way of Santa Fe County (UWSFC) will honor five teachers with classroom grants of $250 each.  The Great Teachers are: Christine Biree, Third Grade teacher at Atalaya Elementary School; Ted Freedman, Physical Education teacher at Wood Gormley Elementary School; Cathy Miller, Second Grade teacher at Tesuque Elementary School; Dolores Valdez de Pong, Second Grade teacher at Carlos Gilbert Elementary School; and Linda Flores with the La Vida program.

These teachers were nominated by audience members attending the October 11, 2010 premiere of Waiting for “SUPERMAN,” the acclaimed education documentary by the Academy Award winning makers of “An Inconvenient Truth”.  The teachers’ names were drawn by Valerie Plame Wilson, master of ceremonies for the event and board member at UWSFC.

United Way of Santa Fe County hosted the premiere of the documentary and serves as the local Social Action Manager for the film in Santa Fe County.  October has been dedicated to honoring Great Teachers by the Waiting for “SUPERMAN” social action team.

“All of us at United Way of Santa Fe County are pleased to celebrate outstanding educators who are committed to their students’ learning and to educational excellence.” Noted Katherine Freeman UWSFC CEO/President, “We know the extraordinary dedication it takes to be a Great Teacher and appreciate the level of commitment required during this time of decreasing funding for our public schools. We hope that these small gifts will provide valuable resources for their classrooms.”

United Way of Santa Fe County is one of ten United Ways nationwide selected to participate in a pilot UWW Education Mobilization effort.  Through the interconnected Early Learning and care programs of our Santa Fe Children’s Project, (see attached materials) UWSFC is celebrating its seventh year of creating new opportunities for Santa Fe’s children and families.

There will be two upcoming photo opportunities to honor these GREAT Teachers.  On November 4th at 9:30 am Ted Freedman will be presented with his check during his morning physical education class with fourth graders at Wood Gormley Elementary School (141 East Booth Street).  On November 3rd at 5:30 pm, Cathy Miller will be presented with her check during the PTA meeting at Tesuque Elementary School (Bishop’s Lodge Road).
